We’ve been busy this week, so you’ll have to forgive us for being a bit quiet. Don’t think we forgot about Sunday night, though.
Super Bowl XLVIII was a blowout. It was a total massacre, and while we can’t deny that the game may have gotten a bit dull if you weren’t pulling for the Seahawks, we still hope you were watching when this ad for America’s Import, the 2015 Chrysler 200, aired:
“Is there anything more American than America?”
That’s the question legendary singer and songwriter Bob Dylan asks. Now you can tilt your head at the tautology of it all, but it’s a good question when you take the commercial as a whole.
You have to take in the music, the cowboys, the diners, kids, games, choppers. You’ve got to consider Rosie, and Marilyn, and Bob himself. Look at the hard-working men and women on the line. Look at their spirit. Look at the 2015 200, the fruits of their labor. These are the creatures that live on the American road. It’s synecdoche, a whole that represents so many different parts.
Is there anything more American than all of these people and places?
Is there anything more American than America?
We don’t think so.
